During the Bohemian movement period, the aspiring poet, Christian, moved to Montmarte, Paris. He encounters the beautiful Satine, a star performer at the Moulin Rouge, and quickly falls in love. It was not until later when the real Duke of Monroth showed up and discovered what transpired. He threatens to cancel his investment and have Christian killed. Meanwhile, Satine has been hiding a secret illness that potentially takes her life. Find out what will happen to this compelling love story by securing access to the Moulin Rouge the Musical!
Based on the hit 2001 film, Moulin Rouge the musical is one of the most phenomenal Broadway successes in the last decade. The jukebox musical uses renditions of pop hits from various artists, including Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Katy Perry’s “Firework,” David Bowie’s “Let Dance,” Phil Collin’s “One More Night,” and the gargantuan hit, “Lady Marmalade.” The storyline was specially adapted for the stage by Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan. He made some tweaks but maintained the overall plot from the film that viewers loved. The musical opened on Broadway in 2019, a total of 18 years after the film premiered. It took a while to finally take this film to the big stage and the production definitely did not hold back on bringing the Moulin Rouge – where all your dreams come true – to life!
As expected the production didn’t make any shortcuts and secured some of the most superb talents in Broadway. The musical brought in two-time Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers and Tony Award winning choreographer Sonya Tayeh. Meanwhile, the creative team is packed with the most esteemed and talented Tony Award-winning Broadway veterans like orchestrator Justine Levine, scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lightning designer Justin Townsend, and sound designer Peter Hylenski, among others.
“Propulsive and nonstop!” – LA Times
The musical was basically the biggest winner of 2020 with ten Tony Awards out of 14 nominations, five Drama Desk Awards, two Drama League Awards, and 11 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Besides prestigious accolades, the musical also garnered some of the most glowing reviews Broadway has ever seen. Entertainment Weekly called the show “a campy visual feast.” The theater critic complimented the creative team for bringing this musical an all out performance from “masterful” directing, bringing a “decadent set to life,” and giving the costumes a “razzle dazzle touch.” Meanwhile, the Guardian mentioned, “There is a lot to love: with a wonderfully wild energy throughout, it’s happily queerer than the film, and the well-known songs really are spectacular.” The review went on to say that the musical brought out all the stops – “With pyrotechnics, a looming elephant, scenery to die for and a cast with energy to burn.”
Acclaimed critic Gregory Scott Katsouli called the musica, “Spectacular like fireworks.” The writer can’t help but gush over the groundbreaking scenic design and super lighting. “The entire musical bursts out of what seems like the world’s most ornate, elegant and colorful Instagram frame.” Lastly, the New York Theatre Guide published, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical makes a time-honored tale feel fresh.” The writer went on to say that even though the musical drew the concept from a typical tragic romance, Moulin Rouge remains a fan favorite. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical is particularly good at bringing disparate time periods together. Centuries-old music isn’t the only thing with the power to animate a centuries-old love story — our current pop lexicon can, too (mixed with seven total decades’ worth of mainstream hits).”
For its spectacular North American trek, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will travel with a stellar touring cast.
