In 1996 at the Indiana University a group of 10 Acapella enthusiasts started a group we now know as Straight No Chaser, little did they know they would be one of the most well-known acapella groups in the world. They were inspired to name themselves straight no chaser because of the 1967 album by Thelonious Monks.
In 1998 Straight No Chaser made a comical version of “12 Days of Christmas” and ended up recording it. This led to them opening for Lou Rawls at the 36-hour dance marathon. Later they posted their version of the “12 days of Christmas” on YouTube and it ended up going viral and now has over twenty five million views.
They then recorded a live concert special in New York in the summer of 2009 which was aired nationally for several years on PBS stations during their pledge drives as a Christmas special. They then did this again in the spring and summer only excluding the Christmas songs and including six not seen before pop songs.
Straight No Chaser then released an extended play of six songs titled “six Pack” in which they kept the bartending play on words. This EP reached the top two hundred on the charts. They also released their second Christmas album “Christmas Cheers” which was co-produced with Deke Sharon. They went on to the late night with Jimmy Fallon and performed a TV theme song medley.
Straight No Chaser won the contemporary Acapella recording award for best holiday album with “Holiday Spirits” which included hits like “Santa Clause is Coming to Town” and Jingle Bells Rock”. And for the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 they performed the song “Back Home Again in Indiana”.
The Group released their fourth album on Atlantic records called “Under the Influence” in 2013. Straight No Chaser then released a holiday EP titled “Under the Influence: Holiday Edition. Which included “Song for Santa” and “Home by Christmas Day” which you can watch at the link below and be transported to the holiday season with them.
