Reviving the holiday tradition, The Nutcracker Indianapolis is live on Sunday, December 17th this year!
Members of the new Indianapolis Ballet professional company will join the exceptional cast of young performers in some of the ballet's key roles for its annual production. The Indianapolis Ballet is now in its fifth season and is the city's first professional resident ballet group in over ten years. Moreover, the Indianapolis School of Ballet is the top location in the city for pre-professional ballet training.
"Seeing the dancers react to a live audience was a very emotional and surreal experience. Energy and life were finally brought back into the Murat Theatre," the production’s development associate and volunteer coordinator Maria Maccaroni shares. "I don't think I have ever seen them smile so big! It was a beautiful moment that will not be forgotten."
The story by E.T.A. Hoffman served as the inspiration for the Ballet production with choreography by Marius Petipa. Ultimately, the plot follows the tale of Clara, a young girl who vividly dreams of a Nutcracker Prince coming to life and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads.
“The company’s principal dancers alternated in the leading roles during the ballet’s run. The matinee performance I saw featured the following dancers who absolutely shined and with whom I thoroughly connected with through their acting, musicality, and partnering chemistry,” award-winning producer Tom Alvarez reviews.
In order to accommodate larger audiences and, for the first time, a live orchestra accompaniment, the Indianapolis School of Ballet moved its production of The Nutcracker to the Old National Centre's historic Murat Theatre more than seven years ago. This venue offers a multi-use space with exceptional adaptability for audiences of all sizes, so don’t hesitate to bring your whole family along!
