Indianapolis Ballet: The Nutcracker is an annual family holiday performance and tradition now entering its fifth season of the crew's career. The company has performed this masterpiece since its conception in 2006. The Tchaikovsky brilliance has become a classic in the performing arts theatre and has become an absolute crowd favorite over the years. Included in almost everyone's Christmas agenda, The Nutcracker is acclaimed as the timeless story of adventure and wonder regarded by The Indianapolis Performing Arts Center with much attention and justice during the holiday season.
The Tchaikovsky classic was inspired by the late and famous German author, E.T.A. Hoffman, of horror and fantasy. Tchaikovsky wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty." With the help of choreographer Marius Petipa and the talent of Lev Ivanov, they've set on bringing the story to life and one of the most intricate art forms of ballet. With the combined brilliance of the team, they were able to put The Nutcracker as one of the most popular plays in the 1800s. The play finally made its way centerstage and even throughout international borders. Today, multiple movie adaptations have passed, with each one successfully containing the heart of the story and the beloved characters. Popular and fan-favorite players include The Sugar Plum Fairy and Drosselmeyer.
Indianapolis Ballet is the first professional resident ballet company to be based in the Circle City in over a decade. The Nutcracker has been performed by other ballet dance companies in the area, but none does it like the Indianapolis Ballet. They pride themselves on the utmost and utter joy of the choreography, music, colorful set, and talented dancers. The two-hour abbreviated version of The Nutcracker ensures the audience joy, laughter, and love through magical storytelling and dancing. The team has the city's only professional ballet company alongside the talented students of Indianapolis School of Ballet. Every performance equates to the grandest staging of this holiday classic as you follow Clara's magical journey into the unknown.
