The musical adaptation of Frozen made its debut as one of the much-anticipated family-friendly theatrical productions. Adapted from the highly lauded 2013 Disney cartoon movie Frozen, which garnered considerable acclaim, Frozen the Musical was formally introduced by The Walt Disney Company's chairman, Bob Iger in collaboration with Disney Theatrical Productions, on January 13, 2014. The process of bringing the musical to life included a pre-Broadway sneak peek in Denver from August 17 to October 1, 2017. Broadway was graced with the musical’s presence as previews commenced on February 22, 2018, at the iconic St. James Theatre, followed by its grand opening night on March 22, 2018. The production crew saw this endeavor as a chance to plunge into the figurines' histories and motivations. Consequently, several high-energy sequences from the original film were trimmed, providing more time to focus on the emotional challenges of the characters. As a result, the musical runs for about twenty minutes longer than its cinematic counterpart.
The Guardian, within its review of the musical, praised its merits, stating, “It evolves into a uniquely magical creation, featuring creative inventions and even a few freshly composed songs (among which stands out a bold and comedic number, emerging unexpectedly to satirize the Scandinavian concept of hygge, as unclothed characters conga out of a sauna). Beyond the consistently exceptional vocal performances and the impressive stagecraft, what truly surprises is the sincere emotional resonance in the portrayal of the profound bond between the two tormented sisters.”
The everlasting tale of two princesses from Arendale remains captivating audiences. The narrative, which perfectly portrays the sisterly love as they navigate a journey of personal growth, is both universally understandable and profoundly touching. With that said, Frozen the Musical promises to be a must-see experience for families of all sizes this fall.
