Murat Theatre at Old National Centre
This might one of those events that you've been waiting for, for a long time. At the same time, you weren't necessarily aware of the fact that you were waiting for it! Je'Caryous Johnson's "Jason's Lyric Live!" brings all of the magic of the movie to the stage. Many actors from the original cast of the film are going to reprise their roles and bring this adaptation to the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre on Sunday, March 16th.
This is certainly not a play that you've seen before. Plus, Je'Caryous Johnson has enlisted the help of R&B stars to ensure that the musical numbers are epic! One of the most ambitious undertakings in the theater industry seemingly came out of left in late 2024 with famed producer Je'Caryous Johnson announcing that he's bringing the cult classic movie Jason's Lyric to the stage. He's not only taking the concept and adapting it to the format. He's doing so while bringing along some of the original characters of the film. Most notably, Allen Payne stepping back into the lead role as Jason. While this is certainly a move that has the fans excited, it's also going to be interesting to see how he fits into the role 20 years later! Another intriguing element will be how Eva Marcille fits into the role of Lyric. This is the slot that Jada Pinkett Smith occupied in the original film.
The "issue" with this re-cast is what's become of Jada since then! She's proven, at least in the public eye, that she shares a lot of similarities with "Lyric." This leaves Eva Marcille in an awkward position because is she playing Lyric, or is she playing Jada? Obviously, this element is something that has added to the anticipation from the fan base. The live show promises to bring incredible renditions of the song in the film. That's one of the main reasons that Je'Caryous Johnson got someone like K. Michelle involved. The original itself comes with a lot of drama. Knowing the backstory of the film and the surprise that this tour has caused just adds a ton of fuel to the fire. If you want to come out to the theater and see a play you've never seen before, this is one of the few chances that you're ever going to get!
The Murat Theater is a good place to say play, pretty much regardless of where you're sitting. As is customary with theater night, the pit area won't be available.
