Synopsis

Wicked is a Broadway smash hit musical that tells the story of Elphaba and Glinda, two young women who become the unlikeliest of friends, fulfilling their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. The tale takes place before Dorothy arrives in the magical land of Oz and includes several references to the 1939 cult classic movie The Wizard of Oz.

Elphaba is shunned for her green skin, while Glinda is popular and beautiful. Their unique friendship is tested by their differing personalities, conflict over a love interest, and Elphaba’s battle against the Wizard’s corrupt government. When she discovers the corruption in Oz, Elphaba is labeled the Wicked Witch. Meanwhile, Glinda’s hunger for popularity steers her to be seduced by power. The Broadway hit explores themes of sisterhood, discrimination, corruption, prejudice, and resilience.

Creative Team

Mary Kate Morrissey, who is currently the standby for Elphaba, will take on the role full-time, and Alexandra Socha will wear the hat of Glinda. Also joining the cast is the Tony Award winner Donna McKechnie as Madame Morrible, Natalie Ortega as Nessarose, and Brad Oscar as the Wizard. Continuing Wicked cast members include Jordan Litz as Fiyero, Jake Pedersen as Boq, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond.

The production is complemented by an incredibly talented creative team, including Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Winnie Holzman, Choreography by Wayne Cilento, Set Designer by Eugene Lee, Costume Design by Susan Hilferty, Lighting Design by Kenneth Posner, as well as Sound Design by Tony Meola.

History & Awards

The Broadway smash hit production of Wicked has won several accolades, including an impressive three Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design. In total, Wicked has been nominated for a whopping 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. 

At the Drama Desk Awards, the show won seven awards, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical, Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Costume Design. And that’s not all, Wicked even bagged a staggering 10 Outer Critics Circle Awards and a coveted Grammy Award for the Best Musical Show Album Award for the original cast recording. 

The production opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre on the 30th October 2003. The original stars included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The show is set for a two part movie adaptation, with the first part opening in the States in November 2024 and the second part in November the following year.

“This musical is full of glitz and is, in many ways, a big Broadway spectacular; it is also a charming story with a wonderfully catchy score. Wicked is satisfying in a sparkly way, and also in a storytelling way. And it spans demographics. You don’t really need to have a great knowledge of The Wizard of Oz, or really a great grasp of the English language to enjoy the experience. I have to imagine this crossing of international borders is one of the reasons Wicked remains such a must-see. Tickets are still hard to come by and the front-row ticket lottery always draws a massive crowd.”
