In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally produced by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by award-winning cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and creations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show full of young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the height of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his dream and inspiration. He hopes to start a chance to succeed as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new contacts, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to create a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge that captures his attention. Their developing love however meets a difficult challenge in the person of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and improve the nightclub's standing. So starts Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the Broadway stage.
Basically a love affair that remains a sure favorite up to today, the musical is also a mixture of both ballads and pop music, putting together arrangements not just from the 2001 film, but also song mash-ups and medleys from new songs that were woven into the creative direction of Moulin Rouge.
